That is the whole season, for us and for most of this coast: the first departures go out in May, the last ones at the end of October, and everything in between is decided by the weather on the day rather than the calendar. Here is what each month actually looks like from the deck, and what happens in the months when the boats stay tied up.
Month by month: what runs and what the sea is like
- May · Everything runs: the Three Island Tour, the Blue Lagoon half day, the Blue Cave and Krka. The water is the coolest of the season, so May suits people who come for the islands and the light more than for long swims.
- June · The sea reaches around 22 to 23°C and is warm enough for proper swimming by mid-month. Long days, calm seas and lighter crowds make it one of the two best months of the year here.
- July and August · The busiest months. Everything runs daily, the water is at its warmest on land-holiday terms, and booking ahead stops being optional: for the Blue Lagoon half day it is worth booking a day or two ahead.
- September · The local favourite. The sea is around 24 to 25°C, warmer than June, and the crowds fall away in the first week of the month. If you can choose any month, choose this one.
- October · Still running, still swimmable: around 21 to 22°C early in the month and 19 to 20°C by the end. Wind, not cold, is what closes days out, and morning departures beat the shrinking daylight.
Why the season is May to October and not longer
The limit is not the temperature, it is the wind. What ends the season is the bura, the cold north-easterly that comes down off the mountains and turns the channel to whitecaps in an hour. Bura days are rare in high summer and become steadily more common from mid-October, until running a scheduled tour stops making sense at all. The sea itself would let you swim well into the autumn; the boats are the part that needs calm water.
That is also why no month of the season carries a guarantee. A strong blow cancels a departure in July just as surely as in October. When that happens we tell you before you board, never after, and you move to another day or take a full refund.
October, honestly
October deserves its own honest paragraph, because it is a genuinely different month rather than a cooler September. The water is still fine for a swim, but it is a swim-and-dry-off month, not a lounge-in-the-water month. Sunset moves from about 19:00 at the start of the month to around 18:00 at the end, so the morning departure is the better half of the day, and a windbreaker earns its place in the bag. The one practical rule for October: leave yourself a spare day. Book the tour for the middle of your stay rather than the morning of your flight home, so a windy day still leaves you an alternative date.
What happens from November to April
The scheduled tours pause. There is no group departure to the Blue Lagoon in December and no Blue Cave trip in February, and any operator offering one deserves a sceptical look. What does not pause is us: we answer email and WhatsApp year round, and winter is when a surprising amount of the next season gets planned.
Outside the season we do not run scheduled group tours, but a private charter or a boat rental can sometimes be arranged in good weather. Some winter weeks here are flat calm and sunny; plenty are not, and nobody can tell you which yours will be from three months out.
Can I visit the Blue Lagoon in April?
Not on a scheduled tour. The lagoon itself is there all year, but departures to it start in May, when the Blue Lagoon half day begins running its morning and afternoon slots. If your trip lands in April, the honest options are two: ask us about a private arrangement if the weather happens to cooperate, or shift the boat day to the very start of May if your dates have any give in them. What we will not do is sell you an April swimming trip and let the water temperature be your problem.
Booking early: what actually needs it
If you are researching in winter, you are in the best position a guest can be in, because May and June bookings made early get first pick of dates. Deposits are small and flat rather than a percentage, full-day tours cancel free up to 48 hours before departure and the half day up to 24 hours, so booking early costs you almost nothing in flexibility. Where it earns the most:
