Trogir Out of Season: November to April

From November to April there are no scheduled group boat tours from Trogir. The town is still there, though, and it is a different place without the summer sitting on top of it. Here is what the off season is, and what it is not.

Between November and April there are no scheduled group boat tours from Trogir. Our season runs May to October, and so does almost every other operator's on this coast. What does still happen: a private charter or a boat rental can sometimes be arranged in good weather, and the town carries on being one of the most complete medieval towns on the Adriatic, with nobody queueing to photograph it.

What does not run

The scheduled departures stop, all four of them. There is no group trip to the Blue Lagoon in December and no Blue Cave day in February, and any operator advertising one deserves a sceptical look. The limit is the wind rather than the cold: the bura, the north-easterly that comes down off the mountains and turns the channel to whitecaps within an hour, is rare in high summer and steadily more common from mid-October. The sea itself would let you swim well into the autumn. The boats are the part that needs calm water. Our season dates guide takes the whole year month by month.

What can sometimes be arranged

Outside the season we do not run scheduled group tours, but a private charter or a boat rental can sometimes be arranged in good weather. Ask us, and we will tell you what the sea is doing that week rather than what a brochure says it should be doing. Some winter weeks here are flat calm and sunny; plenty are not, and nobody can tell you from three months out which sort yours will be. Treat an off-season boat day as something to check a few days ahead, not as the thing you build the trip around.

The old town does not close

Trogir's historic core sits on a small island between the mainland and Čiovo, and the whole of it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: marble streets, Romanesque churches, Venetian palaces. You can cross it end to end in ten minutes, which in July means ten minutes of shuffling behind tour groups and in January means ten minutes. The Cathedral of St. Lawrence with its carved Radovan Portal from 1240, the 15th-century Kamerlengo Fortress on the western tip, the palm-lined Riva along the water: all of it stands exactly where it stands in August. What we will not do is publish winter opening hours. Churches, museums, the bell tower, restaurants and whatever the town puts on in December all keep their own off-season timetables, and those change from one year to the next. We have not read this year's, so we are not going to invent them: check locally, or with the tourist office, close to your dates. The one thing worth knowing in advance is that the open-air concerts and film nights at Kamerlengo are a summer fixture rather than a winter one.

The quiet, and what to do with it

The real attraction of Trogir out of season is that there is less of everything: fewer people on the Riva, no queue at the cathedral door, parking that exists. Walking is the whole activity, and for a couple of days it is enough. The beaches are still there and completely empty, the long pebble stretch at Okrug, the resort beach at Medena in Seget, the quiet coves along Čiovo. Split is the obvious change of scene: bigger, with more nightlife and transport links, and about a 30-minute drive with regular buses and taxis either way. Write before you fly rather than after you land. Tell us the dates and we will say whether a private charter or a rental is realistic for that week and what it would involve, and we will say no when the answer is no. Winter is when next summer gets booked

The quiet months are the best time to plan the loud ones. The season opens in May, the best dates in May, June and September go early, and one winter email with your week in it can settle the whole boat side of a holiday before anybody else has started.
